SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

As one of our specialised services, shockwave therapy allows us the ability to treat chronic conditions safely and effectively. Using protocols proven through research, we screen our patients carefully to ensure cases are appropriate for shockwave therapy. Most patients who follow our recommendations experience 70-90% resolution of their condition.

Shockwaves are acoustic, high-energy sound waves that are used for medical application. Radial Shockwave therapy is the ideal treatment method for chronic muscle and tendon conditions. The benefits are a quicker recovery, pain reduction and the breakdown of calcification.

Shockwave therapy has been effective and indicated for the following conditions:

  • Treatment of tendinopathies

  • Chronic hamstring conditions

  • Myofascial trigger points

  • Achilles tendinopathy

  • Bursitis - shoulder, hip, knee, retro-achilles

  • Tendonitis

  • Scar tissue

  • Jumper’s knee

  • Non-union of fractures

  • Tennis elbow

  • Patellar tendinitis

  • Plantar fasciitis/heel spurs

  • Shin splints

  • Stress fractures

  • Enhancement of bone healing

  • Calcific rotator cuff tendinitis

We use only protocols of care that are proven through research when providing shockwave therapy. Patients are seen for 3-8 visits, having one session per week. Patients often experience relief after 1-3 sessions. The maximum effect of having shockwave therapy will occur 8-12 weeks after completing the protocol of care, as tissue regeneration requires this time. It is expected that you complete your prescribed therapeutic exercise program throughout the course of treatment.

Shockwave therapy is an excellent treatment option and can be included in your treatment (as clinically indicated on assessment) in addition to standard physiotherapy care. This means you are covered by private insurance rebates under physiotherapy codes as a valid and evidence based treatment option.
